Michelle Malkin has video of a dustup between Specter and Kennedy. I caught this on Fox and it was great to see Kennedy being slapped down hard.
This was part of an embarrassing and disgusting attempt to portray Alito as a bigot because he was a member of a conservative Princeton Group. The irony would be complete if only Senator Byrd was on the judiciary committee. Ah, one can dream.
But in the midst of this Lindsey Graham apologized to Alito and Drudge reports:
One senior Republican in the hearing room said of the situation: “After three full days of attacks against her husband’s character, Mrs. Alito had enough. Democrat behavior during this hearing has not only been wrong, it’s been embarrassing. Ted Kennedy is nothing but a bully.”
At this point the Democrats should call it quits. By strict political calculations, they have not succeeded in providing the cover they need to stop this nomination from going forward. In fact they’re antics today have weakened their position. Possibly that was not the goal. Antics like this would make their leftist supporters very happy. But in the end, it’s results that matter and the Democrats will not get the result they want.
On the other hand, I’ve often been wrong by overestimating the Democrats ability to make reasonable political calculations.
Typical comment from the Leftist Sewers:
The question is…Why was she crying?
A. She was upset her husband was being accused of being a bigot?
B. She was crying because her husband is a bigot?
Nice.
Though they try to portray him as a bigot for his involvement with the Alumni Group at Princeton, they clearly “missing” the facts. The group lists diversity goals and praised Princeton for its effort to promote diversity. In fact, while at Princeton Alito belonged to a social and eating club that was open to all students instead of the selective private clubs. These are the type of facts that need to be made clear in response to the attacks from democrats in the nomination hearings. But, Alito hasn’t had much of a chance to even respond to the accusations.
