General

Schmidt vs. The Hill and McEwen.

Tip from a private source…

It appears that there might be a coordinated attack on Schmidt from the McEwen Campaign and various sympathetic sources in the DC Media outlet The Hill.

March 8th: The Hill:

“Congresswoman Schmidt and Congressman Tancredo recently met to discuss immigration,” Adams said. During the meeting, Schmidt joined the immigration-reform caucus but that was all that transpired, he said.

“There was no endorsement,” Adams said flatly. “We normally do not endorse out-of-state races.”

He added that while Tancredo had done so occasionally this was not one of those instances.

Adams attributed the mistake to a miscommunication.

Tancredo’s office contacted Schmidt’s and asked to have the item removed.

“Mrs. Schmidt had a meeting with Mr. Tancredo about his support for her,” said Schmidt spokesman John Ashbrook. “We understood it to be an endorsement.”

Barely relevant, somewhat on-topic as there is very little news going on, but surely there is something going on in the whole 50 states, 435 congressmen and 100 senators that is more interesting for The Hill…

March 9th: The Hill, same byline:

As a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1984, Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio) expressed her contempt for a future colleague and allegedly likened young Republican activists to Hitler, according to an interview published by the local paper at the time.

While shadowing Schmidt at the convention, The Cincinnati Enquirer reporter initially described Schmidt as a “woman who will speak her mind whenever she pleases.”

Hoo boy, this one isn’t relevant, is largely accurate vis-a-vis Liddy Dole and how conservative she is (she isn’t). What a 32 year old remarks at a political convention has a tough time translating into anything 22 years later when the 32 year old is now 54. Please. But leave that aside, so she says what she thinks? is that a bad thing? Or are we supposed to elect people who only say what they think we want to hear? Honestly I thought that was the reason we don’t like politicians in the first place. Same story could have slanted it as “Schmidt, a breath of fresh air, not afraid to have a voice, etc.” But it’s slanted the other way. Agenda anyone?

Then my source tips me off that an email was sent (I have a copy) from a McEwen campaign bigwig, touting this last story and the email was sent at 8:13 am today, the day the story comes out.
So we have a 22 year old non-story, and the McEwen campaign pushing it. This smells of desperation, but wait it gets better…

The writer of this particular story in The Hill is one Jackie Kucinich, daughter of … wait for it … our very own socialist congresscritter from Northeast Ohio, Dennis Kucinich, uniter of the workers of the world and onetime presidential candidate in a hopeless cause.

Maybe she’s fair and balanced, and there’s nothing to it. But it smells bad and I’m cynical. I’m just gonna put it out there.
So we have the daughter of one of the most liberal Democrats in the House pushing a couple of questionably newsworthy stories, and Bob McEwen jumping right on it. Is something going on here? Has McEwen given up on the whole “bringing dignity” idea already? Did he ever mean it in the first place?

Actions speak louder than words and McEwen’s actions are saying that he doesn’t mind allying with the liberal media against a conservative if it gets him what he wants.

UPDATE:

WMD has an interesting post and comment about the very same interesting bedfellows in the anti-Jean Schmidt Alliance.

Note to Whistleblower readers.  You may figure this out quickly but I’m not really a “left-wing blogger”  But then again, maybe I am because as we all know, the whistleblower is never wrong ;-)

Discussion

Comments are disallowed for this post.

  1. Jackie’s bio at The Hill indicates she put in time at The Nation, not exactly a bastion of fair and balanced reporting.

  2. I think you’re right on about Bob’s scarfing up on this non-story being a possible sign of his desperation. And this early in the goings on, too. Maybe he’s taken a good hard look at his campaign treasure chest and decided it’s not very heavy.

  4. The Hill is a quality newspaper that gives a ton of information about the workings of Capitol Hill. If someone thinks The Hill has it out for them, they’ve really got problems.

And wow, I’m really shocked that someone from a political campaign would forward information about one of their rivals to others. Color me shocked. At some point, the Schmidt campaign and her lemmings needs to take some responsibility for their own candidate’s failings.

Maybe you should spend some time discussing why Mean Jean is referring to other Republicans as “young Hitlers”. It’s bad enough when Paul Hackett and Julian Bond say things like this about Republicans, but it’s especially atrocious when other Republicans would do that. There’s a lot I don’t like about Mean Jean, but I’ve never called her a Nazi.

  5. Jeff:

two stories in twp days by a person who used to work for David Corn of The Nation?

Just because your paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get ya :-)

  6. What bullies. COAST, Finney, Brinkman, Miller (and you, Jeff) are the ones supporting McEwen. Why? Well, you SAY because of Rep. Schmidt’s past tax vote that she gave only in return for cutting off funding to Planned Parenthood, our state’s largest abortion provider.

Well, Mr. McEwen was only one of 8 Republicans to vote [twice] against President Reagan because [while he was in] Congress, the Transportation Bill that was sent to Reagan had too much pork in it…so Reagan vetoed it…McEwen then voted to override President Reagan’s veto. All because he wanted more pork…

But this isn’t about taxes or anything other than hate and wanting to manuever people into DC for favors at a later date…the very antithesis of what our Founders intended.

Like it or not, like her or not, she has worked hard for this ENTIRE district. Ask the home schoolers, ask my family in Portsmouth who were going to lose their jobs before Christmas, ask the workers in the Batavia Ford Plant.

The only time we’ll see McEwen is on TV, waving to all of us from DC and his $900,000 home saying “suckers!”

  7. Come on…the whole “It’s a conspiracy” meme is simply ridiculous. “Omigod look! McEwen’s campaign promoted a negative story about his opponent on the SAME day as it came out!”

    Oh. The horror.

Have some of you never observed a political race before? It’s kinda standard for a campaign to comment when their opponent takes a broadside…especially when it’s in a respected outlet like The Hill. Despite Kucinich’s background (which would work against McEwen also) the readership of The Hill is not going to view this as some secret liberal hitpiece on poor Jeannie. The Hill is some left wing opinion mag…it’s a chronicle of things political in DC.

This is bad for Jeannie…and wishful thinking isn’t going to make it different.

  8. Make that, “The Hill is NOT some left wing opinion mag”.

Leave the tinfoil hat at the door folks…

  9. Lawshark: I agree, it could be entirely innocuous, but how often does The Hill dredge up 22 year old stories?

Maybe a lot I don’t know, don’t read it that often, I’m just saying this smells bad enough that reasonable people have more than enough to be suspicious about what the underlying agenda is here.

  10. Dave,

I think it’s very likely that someone brought the story to the attention of The Hill, but I fail to see how that constitutes some sort of conspiracy with the McEwen camp. The Hill is the type of media outlet that’s not going to just run every oppo piece that gets fed to them…covering 535 egos on the Hill and their challengers must result in an absolute deluge of “tips”.

I’m sure that someone in the Anti-Jeannie or Pro-McEwen camp probably dug the story up…then again…with the wonders of Lexis/Nexis it is also very possible that Kucinich did a media search with Jeannie’s name and turned it up on her own. Almost NOTHING published is not accessible online these days…and searchable. Lexis/Nexis is a far more sophisticated and comprehensive tool than any web engine.

As to the underlying agenda…you don’t think that Jeannie’s been tagged with the “big mouth” label in DC already? OH-2 may be debating whether she needs a gag or a microphone but it’s really not up for debate whether Jeannie has a big mouth. The old article plays to that image…and therefore is going to be considered more “newsworthy” by the media.

It’s kind of like all the complaints about the “Bush is stupid” and “Al Gore exagerates/lies” stories in 2000. Each man had his “image” set in the mind of the media and they loved to print stories that confirmed their image.

  11. Lawshark, newsflash, Chris Finney has hired someone whose sole purpose it to dig up these non-stories. I know who you are, mock-trial neighbor, and I am sadly disappointed…

And seeing how McEwen’s supporters’ (COAST) past behavior shows a pattern of unholy alliances, along with Bob trying to unearth any “anti-schmidt” ally (Kucinich) in DC may not prove collusion in your mind, but it does to the average voter who knows what these tantrum-throwing babies are capable of.

If you think someone who has been vacant from this district for 13 years can effectively serve it, then vote for Bob and allow COAST to destroy the rest of the counties just like they did Hamilton County.

    Posted by Tess | March 10, 2006, 9:03 am
  12. Tess, not sure who you think I might be…but I’m pretty sure you’re mistaken. I’m assuming your reference to “mock-trial” indicates that you know me from law school or something? I’ve never participated in mock trial…so I think you’re guessing wildly.

If you actually read what I wrote…I in no manner denied that someone who dislikes Jeannie or likes McEwen may have sent this to The Hill.

    So what?

The Hill is not in collusion with McEwen in some sort of Anti-Jeannie vendetta. I would guess that they get emails/calls about old stories on candidates dozens of times a week. They ran this one because it fits the storyline that surrounds Jeannie…the woman with a big mouth. That’s a storyline created also by Jeannie through her own actions too…not just her opponents.

  13. “Lawshark, newsflash, Chris Finney has hired someone whose sole purpose it to dig up these non-stories.”

How are you so familiar with what Chris Finney does? Are you his wife? Do you have proof that he’s hired someone whose sole purpose is to dig up stories? You’ve always got a conspiracy for everything

What I haven’t heard from you is why Jean Schmidt referred to Ronald Reagan delegates as, “young Hitlers”. I haven’t heard you explain why Mean Jean said about Senator Dole, “I hate that woman” and booed her at the Republican National Convention. She seems to have a serious, and long term, problem of conducting herself with integrity when disagreeing with someone’s ideas.

  15. Hmmm…maybe I should add to the tinfoil hat fodder…

Would it make it more interesting to know that my brother in law writes for The Hill?

Or that I have relatives who consulted on the McEwen campaign last year?

    Could it all…be…tied…together?

    bwahahahahahahaa!

    Posted by Lawshark | March 10, 2006, 8:20 pm
  16. PS…for those who are charter members of the tinfoil hat brigade…let me stop you in the midst of your “AHA!” moment…

The facts I stated are true…

But there is no connection to the story…

Not that people will stop with the conspiracy theories…

  17. CJ, I do know what Finney does…how and why you won’t find out until after this election.

  18. Tess…so…Only the Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

    Shouldn’t you change your monniker?

Plus…do you still think you know me?

  19. I think I need to call Chris Finney and let him know who his stalker is. Nah, you’re just a wacko with a million conspiracy theories who knows a lot less than you think.

Quick, duck! There’s a black helicopter outside your house RIGHT NOW!!!

  20. The Whistleblower linked to this post as one bashing Schmidt, and, if I remember correctly, called you a “liberal blogger.”
