Let’s keep in mind that two muslim soldiers were good guys in this story:
Two British Muslim soldiers targeted by the alleged beheading gang were used in an extraordinary “sting” operation to snare their assassins, it has emerged.
The courageous pair agreed to act like “tethered goats” in an attempt to catch the extremists plotting to kidnap them.
The soldiers - who are not thought to have told their families that they were potential targets - were placed under unprecedented surveillance for weeks as officers waited for the terrorists to strike.
And as they tried to carry out their ordinary duties, the pair were aware that if the gang attempted to stage their abduction they could be attacked and bundled into a waiting vehicle at any time.
To prevent this, the security forces mounted a sophisticated surveillance operation.
Redstate has more on the implications of this kind of terrorism:
The kidnapping – and public torture and execution – of one soldier would have had a catastrophic effect on the people of Britain, both military (who now have cause to fear for their life, both on and off duty) and civilian. Further intelligence recovered from the arrest sites, though, revealed a list of no fewer that thirty targets for abduction – all male soldiers in their 20s, all Muslim.
…
In all seriousness, though, the existence of this plot should reinforce to all of us, whether in Britain or safely (for now) in the United States, the very real – and very current – threat posed by the radical Islamists who still, five years after 9/11, wish to kill us all. Despite the best intentions of the peace-first crowd, concessions will not work. The only currency known to our enemy is strength, and any other recourse will not be seen as an act of good faith, but as an act of supreme weakness – and will not bring about a peaceful end, but will encourage more violence on the part of those who oppose us.
It is not for the sake of political victory, or of permanent alliance, that we must now band together and support both our country and our soldiers and police as they take the fight to the enemy; rather, it is for the sake of our very survival. The enemy – declared to be so by their actions, not by our whim – has shown again and again that they have the will to fight on, against soldiers and civilians alike, as long as it takes to wear down and defeat us. Do we have the will to fight back, and to overcome those who will be appeased by no end but total victory or total defeat?
Keep in mind that the terrorists are doing this because they think they are winning. They’re in it for the long haul and their audience this time, as Jules points out is the Western Muslims who think they don’t have to choose sides. The terrorists want them to know that if they aren’t actively helping Al Qaeda, they are enemies of Islam.
That’s insane I know, but it’s the way Al Qaeda thinks and how they justify grabbing a fellow Muslim off the street for a beheading.
Do you think our civil rights are in danger now? Do you think the Federal government has too much power to search and seize? Then you better get serious about this terrorism thing.
And with Al Qaeda essentially now declaring war specifically and locally against the internal security of sovereign nations, with enemy soldiers firmly encamped and radicalized within the battlezone (as an aside, I’m guessing many smug Brits, in their more private, soul-searching moments, are beginning to question the wisdom of their gun laws), I suspect that we’ll begin to see a vocal howling by the population of such countries for draconian governmental measures once that first throat is slit, or that first school is shot up.
The last part refers to a Beslan. A horrific idea that we all assure ourselves Could Never Happen Here. But it has already happened there.
Needless to say I don’t have much respect for those who are “saving the constitution” by preventing the government from listening to international phone calls without a warrant. Even while the same people advocate violations of the second and tenth amendments as if they didn’t exist.
We’re in a war. The soldiers of our enemies live and breath among us and they are citizens. The primary duty of the government is to find and kill them, not prosecute them. Our greatest asset in doing this is also the American Islamic community. Remember the Chicago Shopping Mall Plan.
