As you would expect, I’m not at all happy with the Senate’s 64-35 approval of going forward with the immigration bill. Especially our hard-of-hearing senator Voinovich.
As for Mr. save-the-small-town-manufacturing-jobs Sherrod Brown, importing millions of illegal aliens to compete for jobs and lower wages is exactly the sort of hypocrisy I expect from a Democrat. No surprises there.
CQ is going through the bill line by line and coming up with some outrageous stuff:
POINT 3: Page 33, lines 19-25: Z-visa non-immigrants over the age of 65 are not expected to maintain employment in order to remain eligible to be in the US. Again, why would they be here if they’re not working and not applying for a regular immigration status?
You can do the same with NZ Bear’s searchable version.
In the house we’re doing much better:
An influential group of Republicans in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected President George W. Bush’s sweeping immigration reform bill — before even seeing the final product.
The House Republican conference voted by 114 votes to 23 in favor of a resolution expressing opposition to an immigration reform bill which is struggling to pass in the Senate, before being sent to the House.
Normally that would kill it right there, because the Democrats can force it through but they do NOT want to own this. They want significant Republican support which it appears they will not get. But the senate leaders aren’t taking any hints.
[...] among other things, makes the point that Sherrod Brown doesn’t deserve a pass on this [...]
