Reporting on Personal Income

Big attention today given to Bizzyblog’s post  (and updated here) about the NYT’s slanted reporting of the personal income news.   I say slanted (and I dont use the word lightly) because given the same set of facts, one could have reported the same exact story about how the Bush administrations policies have guided the American economy out of what could have been a terrible recession.  That would have been a slanted story as well, but from the opposite direction.   Same set of facts, different story.  So… slanted, yes.

A neutral story would have done what Bizzyblog has done, and drawn some context around by not starting at the absolute high point of the market in the last twenty years.  That guarantees skewed results.

Notable that the reporter, David Cay Johnston is going around commenting and defending his story on the various blogs.  See Instapundit for various links.  Feeling vulnerable?  Commendable that he’s doing so, but his arguments are not overly persuasive and I get the feeling he’s entrenching his position, not attacking.
