Captains Quarters brings up a very good point, using the “gay code” in a public mens bathroom may (and probably should) lead to getting your lights punched out by an annoyed normal guy, but is it a crime?
But Western blogger Adam summarizes it for most of us:
Senator Craig’s explanation that this was all a “misunderstanding” doesn’t wash. Nor does his explanation of his guilty plea as something he did to resolve the issue expeditiously jibe. No innocent man in his right mind would plead guilty to a loaded charge like “lewd conduct” much less a man with 27 years in Congress. If Senator Craig is lying, he has a serious problem, if he is telling the truth, then he lacks the basic good judgment to be in the United States Senator. Either way, it’s time for him to go.
Also his post is chock full of links and updating.
Fellow SOB alliance blogger TaxMan gave me a chuckle:
Third, why can’t gays meet each other in bars like heteros do? If you need a signal because your gaydar’s not that good maybe they could come up with bar signals. Like say…… come into the bar wearing a boa. A dumbass like senator Craig might be able to pick up on that one and you wouldn’t have to run into those messy situations….. like cops picking up on your stall signals.
But think about it. He can’t go to any situation where there’s a bunch of people out of fear of being recognized. If he wants to pursue this and be a family values spokesman, his options are severely limited. Because most folks would recognize the hypocrisy, hence the hoo-ra.
Later on yesterday, Senator Craig doubles down, claims he’s not gay, he did nothing wrong, and he’s going to fight this. He’d better have a good story, because right now, no one is believing this. Especially considering the stories now being printed in the Idaho Statesman.
Yeah, Larry Craig is Over, he just doesn’t know it yet.
Before Fred chimes in with his typical liberal slant, let me re-iterate what I have previously said: Conservatives are calling for the guy to step down like they did in the Mark Foley situation. Would the liberal dems do that? No way. They would run to his defense if he were a dem. We’ll hear all day long calls from hypocrites like Ted Kennedy for the guy to go while ignoring people like Barney Frank in his own party. Like I previously said, they’re OK with it as long as it’s a liberal dem. The left is so full of hypocrites.
well said.
Ding dong! I’m chiming in … Larry Craig’s problem isn’t that he might be gay (he says he isn’t). It’s that he’s a PERVERT. Not all gays are perverts, just as not all “Christians” are bigots, or all Republicans Texas idiots … The Craig deal - like the Foley deal - stems from the fact that these guys were professional holier-than-thou types who condemned others for doing what they were doing … Presidents and House Speakers who have extramarital affairs are NOT in the same category as child-molesters or perverts who hang out in park … A gay couple holding hands in the same park is NOT the same as the guy who hits on underage pages or crawls around men’s restrooms looking for a “quick fix” … If you guys don’t know the difference, one might soon be reading about YOUR exploits in the daily tabloids … Rightwingers spend a lot of time obsessing about what gay people do … REAL MEN (i.e. Clinton Democrats) don’t have the time for such unhealthy pursuits! We’re too busy hanging out with supermodels and beach bunnies!
Frankly Fred, I don’t care what gay people do. Perverts like Larry Craig, Barney Frank, and Jerry Studds, however, have moral character issues that make them susceptible to bad judgment and none of them should be in a position where they make laws for other people to abide by. You REAL MEN (i.e. Clinton Democrats)care only for one thing in this nation. You want to preserve or increase your power no matter what the cost. The price has been the moral degradation of our culture. Think what you want, Fred. Real men with true hearts and a desire to serve their fellow man (i.e. Reagan Conservatives)reside in the Republican Party.
Ha! In your dreams, Gary … I still think it’s puzzling that you can’t tell the difference between being gay and being a “pervert” - I suppose your possibly shaky confidence in your own manhood depends upon your maintainence of a belief that gayness is itself a “perversion” … I don’t agree! … Barney Frank is an admittedly gay congressman, but I don’t think he would have survived scrutiny within a group that was dominated by holier-than-thou Republicans from 1994 until 2006 if he had committed any illegal acts (NEWS FLASH _BEING GAY AIN’T ILLEGAL!) … I know gay people of both sexes and don’t feel the least bit threatened by what they do in the privacy of their own homes (are lesbians considered “gay” by Christian conservative guys who like to watch girls make out on You-Tube?)… What Craig did was in a public place … Foley was preying on underage kids … Hetrosexual perversity can be pretty rank too … Both varieties turn up not only among congressmen, but at lots of Christian “Youth Camps” too! Have you denounced THAT lately?
Uh oh! … Your line about “a desire to serve man” just reminded me of the classic “Twilight Zone” episode … Is THAT what it means to be a Repoblican?
Your latest blather is indeed perplexing. I think the one with questionable confidence in their manhood in this discussion is YOU!
Sorry Fred, you’ve crossed the line. I don’t mind crosstalk, but I do mind gutter talk.
