I’ve been giving this issue some thought for a couple of weeks. Recently we have Michigan and Florida (and perhaps others) moving their primary dates to play a more important role in the candidate selection process. Both Democrat and Republican parties have rules protecting the roles of lowly Iowa and New Hampshire. However, I guess if your Harry Reid, you can get Nevada moved forward which gives us three low population states at the beginning of the schedule.
The parties also have rules that punish the delegations that are selected in any state that violates this system by refusing to seat those delegates. I also note that the parties apparently lean on the candidates to not participate in the elections or caucuses found in violation.
I for one am tired of having Iowa, New Hampshire and in 2008 Nevada play a huge role in determining who gets the momentum and who has to drop out.
My solution is to get as many big states as possible schedule their primaries on the Wednesday after New Hampshire. Let’s give little ol’ New Hampshire and Iowa some due but then require the candidates spend more time and money in States that are truly heterogeneous.
