Can’t believe I’ve missed this guy. Seems I’m always finding good Ohio blogs that I’ve missed before. He has a great analysis on the Hackett defeat yesterday.
The 2nd District special election is not a harbinger of coming defeat for the Republicans. It is difficult at best to use local elections to predict national trends. Because local elections often emphasize local issues and local politics, extrapolation of results to a national level is fraught with peril. So it is with the 2nd District. It seems clear now that a certain percentage of conservative politicos and voters were willing to see Jean Schmidt go down to defeat in order to be better positioned to win the district in 2006. This is true of both Tom Brinkman and his supporters as well as those pushing Bob McEwen. Just about all of the major media and blogging types missed this particular angle to the election, and it was and is significant because it is in no way translatable to the national level. In my own opinion, it seems clear that the non-support of Brinkman, McEwen and their supporters cost Schmidt between 2 and 4 points yesterday.
There’s a lot more in that vein. Go read. And don’t miss the many good articles about the state of the Democratic Party in Ohio these days. Adding to Ohio blogroll.
Dennis is CRAZY! A great blog, thanks for the link to his post.
