Brussels, Belgium (07/FEB/2012)-the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso insisted today that does not arise an exit of Greece of the euro area, then that one of its Vice-Chairpersons stated that this possibility would not mean the end of Monetary Union.  

“We want to Greece to stay in the euro area. The cost of an exit of Greece would be higher than the cost to continue to help the country “to pay its debts, Durao Barroso said at a brief press conference.  

The leader of the European Commission pointed out that the institution is “doing everything he can to find a solution” to the the sovereign debt crisis affecting the country hellene since the beginning of 2010.  

Also assured that the Greek authorities are “very close” to an agreement that would allow the completion of the second rescue package, which could reach 145 billion euros.  

The controversy about a possible departure from Greece of the euro area broke out with an interview granted by the EC, Neelie Kroes, Vice-President to the Tuesday of the Dutch newspaper “De Volkskrant” Edition.  

“It is always said that if you leave a country (for the euro zone) out the whole structure would collapse, but that is not true,” said the Commissioner.  

Hours more later, community spokesman, Olivier Bailly, argued that “there is no no contradiction” between statements by Kroes and the official position of the European Commission regarding the status of Greece.  

“The EC position has not changed: we want to Greece to stay in the euro area”, said.
