WASHINGTON, United States (06/FEB/2012)-the President of United States, Barack Obama, signed an executive order tightening sanctions against Iran and its central bank, saying that the new mandate to freeze assets is necessary because the Iranian banks are hiding transactions, said on Monday the White House.

“I have determined that additional sanctions, required especially in the light of the deceptive practices of the Central Bank of Iran and other banks Iranian to hide transactions of sanctioned parties,” Obama said in a letter to Congress.

He added that the new powers on Iranian assets considered to be in control of United States – including foreign banks branches Americans – are necessary to “shortcomings of the regime against the Iranian money-laundering”, like “the continued and unacceptable risk for the international financial system generated by the activities of Iran”.

Previously, US banks, rather than blocking and freezing, should reject Iranian transactions. New Executive order gives us institutions new powers to confiscate assets, rather than simply deny them.

The Treasury said that the expansion of sanctions will affect the assets of all Iranian ministries and entities of the State, including the central bank, processing income from oil.

“These actions underline the determination of the Government holding responsible the Iranian regime for its failure to comply with its international obligations,” it said in a statement.
