• US proposes an international coalition

The UN Security Council requests Russia and China to help put an end to the regime

BEIRUT/new YORK (06/FEB/2012)-United States proposed creating an international coalition to support the opposition of Syria once Russia and China had blocked an attempt of United Nations (UN) of ending nearly 11 months of bloodshed, while rebel soldiers said that the use of force was now the only way to oust President Bashar Al Assad. The Syrian regime also promised tougher military repression.

The statements are given at a time when the international community react to the decision of China and Russia of continuing support to the Syrian representative.

The vote came after activists said that Syrian forces had bombed the city of Homs on Friday, killing more than 230 people on the worst night of bloodshed of the revolt started 11 months ago. Yesterday, the balance of deaths was 56 people.

Ambassador United Nations, Susan Rice, Washington declared “asqueada” by the veto of Russia and China, and said that “any new bloodshed will be in your hands”.

The British Minister of Foreign Affairs, William Hague, said that Moscow and Beijing had turned their backs on the Arab world. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppé, said that “they were a terrible responsibility in the eyes of the world and the Syrian people”.

Clinton said that United States would work with other countries to try to strengthen the “national and regional” sanctions against the Government of Assad “to dry funding sources and shipments of arms that keep running the regime”.

Clinton gave no details of what Nations could be grouped together or what they could do precisely, but it seemed that United States could help to organize a group of “friends of Syria” – proposed by the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, after the veto – to advance the initiative of the Arab League because of the inability to make progress in the UN due Russia and China.    

The other 13 members of the Security Council voted to support the resolution, which would have “fully supported” a plan of the Arab League that Assad should cede power, withdraw troops from cities and begin a transition to democracy.    

Western criticisms were repeated in the Middle East, where Arabs are Saudi Arabia and Turkey, powers is not Arab, they have become decidedly against the Assad in recent months.

Resolution was partial

The head of the Arab League, Nabil Elaraby, said that the Agency still intended to build support for his plan. The veto “not denies that there is a clear international support for the resolutions of the Arab League”, said in a statement.

The only Arab member of the Council of safety, Morocco, expressed his “great regret and disappointment” over the veto. Ambassador Mohammed Lulichki said that the Arabs had no intention of abandoning his plan.    

The Syrian National Council (CNS) said it was “responsible for the growing acts of murder and genocide” Moscow and Beijing.

Damascus says that he is a victim of the West and hostile neighbors to provide diplomatic cover to an armed insurgency directed from abroad.
