- The reason is that after Fukushima, the Japan country “is not secure”
Does not intend to return to their country, “because the situation after Fukushima is not safe, can not go shopping in the supermarket without fear that the products contain radiation”
MADRID, Spain (04/FEB/2012)-known activist of Greenpeace Toru Suzuki, tried and sentenced for stealing meat from whale in Japan, has decided to migrate to Sweden because he believes that his country “is not safe” after Fukushima.
During a visit to Madrid, Suzuki said in an interview with EFE its current projects, including the construction of a nascent anti-nuclear movement in the Nordic country where he now resides.
In 2010, he and another activist of Greenpeace, Junichi Sato, were found guilty of stealing 23 kilos of whale meat and sentenced to one year in prison, but it was commuted in three years on parole.
Both stole meat captured by a whaler, shifting the boundaries of private property, to demonstrate that these whales were hunted with commercial and non-scientific purposes.
During the interview, Suzuki explains that it has migrated to Sweden, because “Japan”is not safe”after the accident at the nuclear power of Fukushima Prefecture, on March 11, 2011.”
And does not intend to return to their country, “because the situation after Fukushima is not safe, can not go shopping in the supermarket without fear that the products contain radiation”.
“The majority of the population has decided believe that there is no radiation and that foods are safe, if not, they would see the reality and marcharían of Japan”, he said.
In his view, the accident has served to consolidate the image of credibility of Greenpeace with Japanese society, because the answer that he gave to this fact.
As a result, he reasoned, “many people” has looked back and remembered the actions of the environmental organization with the whaling industry.
Suzuki, former director of Greenpeace Japan campaigns, explains that the action for which he was tried and condemned “was not a robbery;” “we didn’t want the meat for us, but denounce the commercial whaling, which do not correspond with scientific purposes as said the Government”.
According to his words, were arrested in an operation carried out by 75 police officers, they spent 23 days held without trial (Japan allow a custody of that duration) and were sentenced to 12 years in prison if they committed any offense in the next three years.
“Whaling was impregnated with government corruption, to the point of being subsidized with public aid”, he assured.
After criticizing “Government control” of the press, also during his trial, Suzuki has pointed out that whaling is not traditional in his country: “imposed by necessity after the second world war, when there was almost no food in Japan and whale meat was a cheap get and very protein”.
“Now makes no sense keeping this industry, because there is a shortage of food as it was then”, has said.
